Possible conflicting software

Some recorders and overlays can interfere with Medal's ability to record gameplay properly. Here is a list of programs that has/have been known for causing conflicts with Medal. Ensure the following programs are not running while using Medal:

Third-Party Software Overlays Known to Cause Issues:

  • Crossover
  • HudSight
  • CrossHairV2

Programs That Have Been Fixed but May Still Cause Issues:

  • CrossHair X
  • Faceit Anti-Cheat
  • Razer Cortex
  • Nvidia Shadowplay
  • GIF Your Game
  • OBS
  • AMD Relive
  • XSplit
  • Gifyourgame
  • Discord
  • RivaTuner Statistics Server
    • Enable Microsoft hooking in RTSS settings to allow games to run correctly with RTSS enabled.
  • MSI Afterburner
    • In Monitoring, turn off 'Show in On-Screen Display', then relaunch your game.

Other Known Fixes

If you have confirmed there are no conflicting software running but still experience issues with black or frozen clips, try one of these fixes below!

Advanced Window Capture

Enabling Advanced Window Capture in Settings > Clips & Recording > Advanced | Recording. For games like Rust, FiveM, and CS2, enabling Advanced Window Capture can help resolve black clip issues during gameplay.

Advanced Window Capture Settings

Force Window Capture

Enable Force Window Capture under Settings > Clips & Recording > Advanced | Recording and restart your game. This should force Medal to choose a different capture mode.

This fix only works for games that are running as Windowed or Borderless. This fix does NOT work on games running as 'Exclusive Fullscreen'.

Experimental Capture

Disable Experimental Capture in Settings > Clips & Recording > Advanced | Recording since this is usually related to another issue different from black Clips.

DXGI Settings

The issue is related to how certain games interact with Windows 11 (specifically version 24H2 and newer). Since some games (like MC and Geometry Dash) runs on OpenGL, certain capture methods, like Advanced Window Capture, are skipped to avoid issues like the mouse cursor not being recorded. Additionally, changes in Windows 11’s graphics system can affect recording capabilities when Minecraft is in fullscreen mode.

  1. Switch to Borderless Windowed Mode: Playing the game in borderless windowed mode instead of fullscreen can resolve this issue. It provides a similar experience without the capture limitations.
  2. Adjust Your GPU Settings: If you’re using an AMD or NVIDIA GPU, enable Vulkan/DirectX settings in your GPU control panel. This can improve compatibility with Medal’s capture methods. (If you have and AMD GPU, reply back to this email for those steps)
  3. Check Multi-Monitor Setup:If you’re using two monitors, make sure both displays are set to the same refresh rate, or try disconnecting one monitor temporarily to see if it resolves the issue. Disable MPO (Multiplane Overlay) if it’s enabled, as it can interfere with screen recording.
  4. Try Fullscreen Optimization: Check if Fullscreen Optimizations (FSO)are enabled or disabled for the game:
    • Right-click the Game's shortcut > Properties > Compatibility Tab > Check/Uncheck Disable fullscreen optimizations and test both settings.

If you continue to experience black clips after following these steps, please send us your Medal Logs and consider Repairing Medal.
