Getting to Know Medal's Settings

Modified on Tue, 7 Oct at 10:06 AM - By Lee B

Medal's Settings menu on Windows is your command center for customizing how the app behaves, performs, and integrates with your system. Whether you're tweaking your recording quality or connecting your accounts, each section gives you control over a different part of the Medal experience.

To access the Settings menu, click the gear icon ⚙️ in the lower-left corner of the app.

Recording Settings

The Recording section in Medal’s Settings is where you control everything about how your gameplay is captured — from video quality to audio, hotkeys, webcam overlay, and even automatic clipping. Whether you're casually saving highlights or capturing full sessions, these options let you tailor Medal to your needs.

Clip Settings

This is your main hub for customizing how clips are triggered and saved.

  • Capture Clips

    • Enable/disable Medal’s clipping feature.

  • Clipping Hotkeys

    • Assign multiple hotkeys with different clip lengths (15s–5m, or custom).

  • Full Session Recording

    • Toggle long-form recording to capture everything from game start to end.

  • Enable Long Press to Start Recording

    • Hold your hotkey to initiate a longer clip session.

  • Screenshots

    • Assign a hotkey to take snapshots during gameplay.

  • Game Switch Hotkey

    • Quickly change the game session Medal is recording.

  • Voice Clipping

    • Use your voice to say "Medal, clip that!" and save a clip.

  • Game Detection

    • Add unsupported games manually so Medal can record them.

Quality

Here’s where you set the visual fidelity of your clips.

  • Quality Presets

    • Choose between Low (360p), Standard (720p), High (1080p), or fully Custom.

  • Custom Options:

    • Resolution – Up to 4K (2160p)

    • FPS – 24, 30, 60, 120, or 144

    • Bitrate – 3M to 100M

    • Encoder – Choose between GPU or CPU

    • Codec – H.264 by default

    • GPU Selector – Automatically or manually pick your recording GPU

? Tip: Higher settings mean better quality, but may use more CPU/GPU and affect performance on low-end PCs.

Audio

Fine-tune how sound is captured in your clips.

Audio Recording Options:

  • Record All PC Audio – Captures everything: games, music, Discord, etc.

  • Record Game Audio Only – Capture only the clean, raw game sound.

  • Record Game + Discord Only – Game and Discord audio, nothing else.

Additional Features:

  • Separate Game & Voice Tracks (BETA) – Edit mic and game audio independently.

  • Output Device Settings – Choose what devices Medal listens to and plays back through.

  • Input Settings – Enable your mic, test audio, adjust volume, suppress background noise, and use push-to-talk if needed.

Video Overlays

Overlay your webcam, or keyboard overlay on top of recorded clips.

  • Camera Overlay Toggle – Turn webcam display on/off.

  • Device Selector – Choose which camera to use.

  • Preview – Check your webcam placement before recording.

Screen Recording

Use this to record your desktop or non-game content.

  • Monitor Selection – Pick which screen Medal records from.

  • Screen Recording On App Start – Resume recording when Medal reopens.

  • Switch to Game Recording on Launch – Automatically switch from screen to game when a game is launched.

Custom Game Settings

Set up game-specific settings for your favorite titles.

  • Per-Game Recording Mode – Choose between Clip or Session.

  • Custom Hotkeys – Override global hotkeys for specific games.

  • Per-Game Quality & Audio – Adjust resolution, FPS, and audio behavior.

  • Reset to Default – Revert any game’s custom settings if needed.

⚡ Auto Clipping

Automatically save highlights using smart in-game event detection.

  • Auto Capture Events – Automatically clip kill streaks, wins, or other key events.

  • Auto Clipping Length – Set how long these clips should be.

  • Game List – Enable or disable auto clipping for specific supported titles like League of Legends, Fortnite, Valorant, etc.

Note: Auto clipping is only available for supported games. You can search and manage the list directly from this tab.

Cloud & Storage

Managing your storage is easy with Medal. Whether you prefer to save clips locally, in the cloud, or both — the Cloud & Storage section gives you flexible options to suit your setup.

Medal Cloud

Managing where your clips are saved — and how much space they use — is simple with Medal. Whether you prefer the convenience of the cloud, local storage control, or both, this section lets you fine-tune your upload, sync, and storage preferences.

This section is divided into two tabs:

 Auto Upload Options:

  • Instantly – Upload clips immediately after they're created. Best for fast sharing, but uses bandwidth.

  • When Game Closes (Recommended)—Waits until you finish playing to upload clips.

  • Never – Disables automatic uploads.

 Upload Type:

  • Medal Cloud – Sync clips directly to your Medal account.

  • Link – Clips are uploaded as temporary links (available for 14 days).

⚠️ Note: Instant uploads may impact your bandwidth while gaming.

PC Storage

The PC Storage tab gives you control over where clips are saved locally and how Medal manages your disk space.

Storage Settings:

  • Capture Folder Location – Select or change the destination folder where clips are saved on your computer.

  • Drive Info – View drive usage stats, including available space and clip size.

  • Local Storage Limit – Set a soft cap for how much space Medal is allowed to use on your drive.

Cloud Sync:

Toggle Cloud Sync to automatically back up your clips and free up disk space. You can access synced clips on any device through Medal.

  • Use the Advanced Settings button to fine-tune syncing and space-saving behavior.

Storage Limit

This feature helps you avoid disk clutter by setting a threshold for local storage usage.

  • Set a Storage Limit – When you go over the selected limit, Medal will begin deleting the oldest eligible files.

    • Available options:
      No Limit, 1GB, 5GB, 10GB, 25GB, 50GB, 100GB, 200GB, 500GB, or Custom

  • Only Delete Full Length Recordings to Free Up Space – When enabled, only full session recordings are deleted to stay under the limit. Clips captured via hotkeys are preserved.

⚠️ You must set a limit before enabling this feature.

After Upload

Automate how Medal handles files that have already been uploaded to the cloud.

  • Free Up Space – Automatically removes local files after they’ve been uploaded. You can always re-download them later.

  • Use Recycle Bin – Sends deleted clips to the system Recycle Bin instead of permanently deleting them.

Other | Recording

Use this section to integrate external recorders or capture folders (e.g., OBS, NVIDIA ShadowPlay) into Medal’s ecosystem.

  • Sync an External Recorder – Browse and select a folder to sync with Medal.

  • Synced Recorders – View and manage currently synced folders.

  • Remove from Library – Unlink an external recorder or folder from Medal.

? Once synced, any new videos saved in that location will automatically appear in Medal.
